Timo Sarpaneva (1926-) studied in Helsinki at the Taideteolllisuuskeskuskoulu from 1941-48. He designed in all kinds of materials including textiles, plastics and metalware as well as glass. His designs were strongly influenced by processes and materials and he experimented with techniques in the various factories where his products were manufactured. This knowledge meant his work is often very innovatory and, as with this vase, the material is worked on using new methods, to produce exciting and very different forms. His work was shown at all the major international design exhibitions, and he was one of the designers to bring Scandinavian design to prominence at the Milan Triennales in the 1950s and 60s.
