Set of Six Dutch Rococo Chairs
Dutch, Mid-18th Century
Set of six Dutch high-backed walnut side chairs in the rococo taste, with drop-in seats. Circa 1750, probably Amsterdam.
Height of back 45" (1,14m).
These chairs are of the same design as an armchair and five side chairs in the Museum für Angewandte Kunst, Köln. The armchair was exhibited in Rococo in Nederland, Rijskmuseum, Amsterdam, 2001-2002, no. 102, pp. 189-190, described as Dutch, rather than German, which had been the traditional attribution. Two others, with minor variations, are in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston,(1) and a further four are at Schloss Augustusburg, Brühl. These present chairs are almost certainly missing a small extra element to the bottom of their front feet (and corresponding small extra height to the back feet), which exists on the other chairs.
