Large Circular Ebonised Table
Ceylon or Dutch East Indies, c. 1825
Height 30¼" (77cm).
Diameter 72" (1,83m).
The scale and fine form of this table is very unusual. Another large circular table of ebonised teak, from Indonesia and now in the collection of the Royal Tropical Institute, Amsterdam, has a similar top, though on a much heavier and more conventional base (see Jan Veenendaal, Furniture from Indonesia, Sri Lanka and India during the Dutch period, 1985, pl. 172, p. 135).
The teak of this table is most likely from either Ceylon or the Dutch East Indies. We are grateful to Adam Bowett for this opinion.
